Forefront
of Display Technologies Powered by New Light Sources Cathode ray tube (CRT) has long been dominating the display device market due to its excellent picture quality. Color gamut for CRT generated by primary colors of electron- beam-excited phosphors has been a standard. Recently, various flat panel displays are proliferating in the consumer electronics space. They use a variety of light sources. However, most of them are still relying upon phosphors illuminated by some exciters. Thanks to the progress of laser and light emitting diode (LED) technologies, displays which use these solid-state light sources became more and more realistic. Laser and LED based display can basically reproduce much wider color gamut than that for conventional phosphor-based light source displays. In this talk, the Grating Light Valve laser projector and the LED backlit LCD-TV will be presented in terms of the technological challenges in utilizing these light sources in conjunction with new color rendering scheme. Some related technologies such as spectral selective high contrast screen will also be addressed. |
